MeeGo is Dead, Long Live Tizen?

As MeeGo (the Nokia-Intel Linux-based mobile device OS project) fades away following Nokia's move to Windows Phone, the Linux Foundation announces a new open source project-- Tizen, a standards-based cross-architecture software platform for multiple devices.

With an initial release aiming for Q1 2012, Tizen should support smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems. The Linux Foundation hopes the first Tizen-powered devices should be available by H2 2012.

Android to Get Intel Optimisation

Intel and Google announce an alliance optimising Android for Intel chips, with Google's Andy Rubin joining Intel CEO Paul Otellini at the Intel Developer Forum 2011 keynote.

The joint effort will leverage Intel technology across both smartphones and tablets, improving Android performance on x86 architecture.

The Eee Slate B121 is the tablet aiming for SMBs-- at least according to Asus. 

It carries an Intel Core i5-470M processor and Windows 7 Professional, providing a familiar PC environment in slim tablet format.

Apple, RIM: Patent Violators?

Mobile software vendor Openwave Systems files complaints against Apple and RIM, accusing the two companies of infringing five Openwave patents. 

According to Openwave, a number of devices-- including iPhone and iPad models, the Blackberry PlayBook and Blackberry Curve 9330-- violate patents involving mobile email, app updates, cloud computing, information navigation and secure mobile connection to a server.

RIM wants small businesses to manage their BlackBerries on the cloud-- through its newly announced BlackBerry Management Center.

The free online service will allow businesses with up to 100 company- or employee-owned Blackberry devices to manage and protect business-related content the smartphones might carry.
