Strong 3rd Quarter for Unified Communications

The UC market reaches its highest growth rate since 2008 in Q3 2010, Dell'Oro says. 

The market expands 7% sequentially as strong seasonal quarters from larger vendors offset weakness in Europe. 

Dell'Oro believes the UC market will continue expanding in 2010, despite pockets of weakness. Vendors will continue investing and expanding their offerings while Microsoft actively pushes Lync. 

Vendors will also continue migrating their installed base over to IP lines-- a process that may take another decade to complete.

 Microsoft Debuts The Missing

Microsoft believes it can quickly reach $1 billion in annual sales to corporates (such as Royal Dutch Shell , Nikon, Boeing and France Telecom et al) by pushing a "re-re-re-vamped" UC software that handles web-based calling and videoconferencing. (Microsoft already does $1 billion annually with SharePoint, a family of software products for collaboration, file sharing as well as web publishing.)

The software, called Lync, wants its share of the $50 billion market for products that help companies replace traditional phones with IP systems.

Social Networking to Replace E-Mail, Says Gartner

20% of employees could be using social networks as their business communications' hub instead of email by 2014, Gartner reports. 

While microblogging already takes part in enterprise communications, business communications are still evolving.

Newer employees entering the workforce will communicate via social networks in paralell to their business e-mail use. This will lead to eventual change in workplace culture.
