SoftLayer Intros Bare Metal Servers

IBM's SoftLayer now offers new bare metal servers deployable in under 30 minutes and charged by the hour, providing customers with raw server performance for compute-intensive workloads.

The hourly bare metal servers either stand alone or integrate with other SoftLayer bare metal, virtual, storage and networking services as part of the global SoftLayer private network.

"As businesses deploy more powerful workloads in the cloud, there is increased demand for performance with even shorter demand cycles," the company claims. "Our new hourly bare metal servers are designed to hit the sweet spot of how much power they need, how long they need it, at price points that make sense.”

NetApp Deepens Cloud Relationships

Enterprise storage vendor NetApp strikes a pair of relationships in the name of the cloud-- one with Microsoft for NetApp Private Storage (NPS), and an expanded cloud partnership with data centre maker Equinix.

As the company puts it NPS enables customers to extend their infrastructure to the Azure public cloud in order to create "a seamless hybrid cloud environment." It handles storage for enterprise workloads such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and SAP, with NetApp taking care of data control while Azure provides compute resource for peak, unforecasted or seasonal workloads.

Data control comes through SnapLock data permanence functionality and NetApp disk encryption, and a secure, high-speed Azure ExpressRoute connection bridges NetApp and Azure resources together.
