New Senior VP for HP EMEA

HP SVPHP appoints Yves de Talhouët as Enterprise and Business senior VP and managing director for HP EMEA. 

De Talhouët succeeds Jan Zadak (recently HP Business Sales and Marketing executive VP) and will oversee the Instant-On Enterprise hardware, software and services portfolio in EMEA.

He will also chair the region's leadership team.

Intel Q1 Earnings Beat Estimates

Intel has many a reason to be jolly-- its revenue for Q1 2011 totals $12.9BN, a 25% Y-o-Y increase compared to Q1 2010. Analysts were predicting revenues of around $11.6BN for the quarter.

The company says such earnings are an all-time record for the company-- reaching double-digit annual revenue growth in all its major product segments and across all geographies. Intel now aims to achieve more than 20% annual revenue growth in total for this year.

Dell's Soaring Cloud Spending

Dell's money is headed for the skies-- specifically the cloud. The company reveals plans to invest up to $1BN this fiscal year alone in new datacentres and cloud technologies. 

The new datacentres are supposed to increase efficiency for clients' IaaS and virtual desktop requirements. 

Dell is hardly the first-- or last-- to increase its cloud investments. Both IBM and HP are also keeping themselves busy as they move away from pushing volume at low margins.

Global Crossing Crosses to Level 3

Level 3 buys Global Crossing for $1.9BN, eliminating one of its rivals while gaining a network base (complete with undersea links) reaching across 3 continents in a single move. 

Global Crossing has access rights to tier-one cables in Asia and across the Pacific amongst its offerings. Level 3's global footprint will now reach more than 70 countries. 

Level 3 says the acquisition will allow it to meet enterprise needs at local, national and international level, while it also plans ti cut infrastructure spending and improve its financial position.  Read more...

Elisa Offers Microsoft's Cloud

Elisa becomes Finland's first operator to offer Microsoft's cloud services, following an agreement to launch with Office 365 solutions later this year. 

The agreement allows Elisa to retail Microsoft's cloud services-- as well as incorporate them within its own service range, including packaging cloud services into network services within a single contract. 

Office 365 is currently in beta, and brings together Office, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online and Lync Online. Elisa managed to get the Microsoft agreement thanks to its partnership with Vodafone.  Read more...

10-Core Intel E7 Processors Roll Out

Intel releases its Xeon E7 processor family-- supporting to up to 10 cores to deliver what Intel says is is a performance increase of 40% over the company's previous generation.

The E7 family contains 18 new processors for 2-, 4- and 8-socket servers, and is expandable to servers with 256 sockets-- meaning IT managers can replace 18 dual-core servers with a single E7-based server. The new chips include Intel's Intelligent Power technology to manage idle power consumption according to workload.
