Lenovo and Compal: A Factory of Our Own

Lenovo and Compal's extraordinary decision to create a joint venture to build PCs begs this question: When do you stop outsourcing?

When a Tier 1 brand buys into its contract manufacturer, it's because competitive pressure means it is no longer possible for contract manufacturers to bear all the cost burden of building new plants.

Lenovo and Compal hope to, together, reach new lows in the cost of PCs... putting more pressure on other makers. That's why the new factory is located far away from traditional plants in coastal China. It's all about Read more...

Michael Dell still believes in the PC market, or so he tells The Financial Times-- with the company set to gain market share as HP goes through "restructuring".

However Dell has "little interest" in purchasing the HP PC business, out for sale since last month.

Dell tells the FT "...the devices and the hardware still matter as part of the complete, end-to-end solution."

The company is the 2nd largest PC vendor, with 12.9% global market share according to IDC-- with HP being the biggest, with 18.1% share.

HP CEO Crisis: Apotheker on the Way Out?

Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal report HP CEO Léo Apotheker could be on the way out just after 11 months on the job, as HP faces decreasing investor confidence in the face of the current PC market slump.

Sources close to the matter mention ex-eBay CEO Meg Whitman as potential temporary replacement.

According to iSuppli HP remains the no. 1 global PC maker-- even if is currently under pressure from both the likes of the iPad and low-cost competition forcing prices (and profits) down.

However as we all know HP put its PC division out for Read more...

The End of the Steve Era

The End of the Steve Era

It had to come. If not now, later, but the end always comes. Steve Jobs resigns, handing Apple over to Tim Cook. You can read Steve's own short resignation letter here.

The computer world, the consumer electronics world...aye, the whole world...is less better off for the resignation of Steve Jobs.

You know he wouldn't resign if it wasn't for his health. The body gives out long before the spirit and that just drenches this news with a rain of sadness.

Across the world, an outpouring of emotion washes across the internet--much of it on the famed devices that Steve built.

It was 1976 actually on April Fools' Day, that the two Steves-- Wozniak and Jobs-- created a new computer circuit board in a Silicon Valley garage. I actually remember their first press release later that year...and I discarded it as insignificant at the time. How little do you know at the time? The electronics trade press that year were full of the rise of Betamax, boomboxes, and personal computers were not yet.

Why do we love Steve Jobs so much?
