Dell Q1 2012 Profits, Revenues Down

Dell posts negative results for Q1 2012, with a -33% Y-o-Y drop in profits and revenues falling by -4%-- declines the company blames on current economic woes and changing consumer preferences.

PC revenues are down by -6% Y-o-Y for the quarter, while consumer sales fall by -12% to reach $3 billion. The company explains some of the PC declines with supply chain disruptions caused by the 2011 Thailand floodings, as well as consumers buying tablets instead of PCs.

Most regions see drops in revenues-- Dell EMEA revenues are down by -1%.

Cisco describes fiscal Q3 2012 results as "solid," with global earnings reaching $2.2 billion with 6.6% Y-o-Y growth even within a "cautious IT spending environment."

Such economic caution resulted in flat EMEA product orders for the quarter. Russia proves to be the next growth territory with a 22% Y-o-Y increase in orders.

Cisco is something of a watermark for vendors-- analysts were expecting the latest Cisco earnings to reflect those of currently struggling rivals Juniper, Riverbed and Polycom.

Motorola Wins Microsoft Injunction

There's no stopping the patent wars-- the German Mannheim Regional Court decides against Microsoft in a set of 4 lawsuits against Motorola, FOSS patents reports.

The decision awards Motorola with an injunction against the distribution of Windows 7, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and the Xbox 360 console in Germany... an injunction the courts cannot currently enforce, as US courts issued a ruling back in April preventing Motorola from enforcing sales bans in Germany for the near future.

This particular legal battle involves patents covering the H.264 video codec. Motorola demands huge royalties (reaching $4 billion annually according to "conservative" estimates), despite an obligation to make licenses to such patents available under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.
