Iomega Launches Desktop Network Storage Device

Iomega reveals the StorCenter ix2 Network Storage-- a 2-bay desktop network storage device designed for content sharing and data protection applications for small and medium-sized business networks.

It uses enterprise-class EMC storage technology and provides up to 6TB of network storage, with features usually not available to small organisations such as out-of-the-box surveillance capabilities (for up to x5 IP camera installations).

It comes in x3 different models-- a diskless unit, a partially populated unit with 1 drive (1, 2 or 3TB of total Read more...

OWC Announces Mini-SAS

Other World Computing (OWC) announces the Jupiter mini-SAS at CES 2012-- a scalable storage solution aiming at small business and enterprises using mission-critical and creative applications.

It uses the mini-SAS interface to reach speaeds of up to 24Gb/s. As a centralised storage solution, it stores data in a single location and allows simultaneous access by multiple workstations while streamlining workflows, eliminating bottlenecks and the need for file duplication.

The company says the Jupiter Hub (the "heart" of the Jupiter mini-SAS) privides Read more...

IBM Goes to the Memory Races

IBM calls it "Racetrack Memory" even if it has nothing to do with neither cars nor horses-- but it might lead to future memory chips with the capacities of HDDs and the performance and durability of SSDs.

The company recently announced it has a working Racetrack Memory circuit at the IEEE International Electron Devices conference, with a chip consisting of 256 Racetrack "cells." Each cell consists of a nanowire 240nm wide and 20nm thick, with "spin currents" (electric currents, in other words) manipulating the magnetic state of the nano-scale Read more...

HP Offers Enterprise-Class Deduplication

HP expands the Information Optimisation portfolio and announces the B6200 StoreOnce Backup System-- the first enterprise-class deduplication appliance from the company.

The system can store up to 768TB in a single chassis, with backup or restore data speeds of up to 28TB per hour. It scales from 48TB (one node with no expansion unit) to 768TB (fully loaded 4-node configuration), with a deduplication ratio of around 20:1.

HP says the B6200 enables deduplication across an entire business-- from remote sites to core data centre-- with management via Read more...

Forrester: Skip Data Tiering, Go SSD

Forrester Research advices companies to skip tiered storage architectures in favour of moving to an all-SSD architecture, even if figuring out how to use such a system might be a "challenge."

Enterprise-class SSDs still remain more expensive than HDDs on a per-gigabyte basis-- up to 10x more so-- but deduplication architectures can reduce capacity requirements, making flash a cost-effective, better-performing alternative, Forrester says.

SSDs are not only faster, but also consume less power and have no moving parts, thus eliminating seek times and Read more...
