Seagate Claims First "Enterprise-Ready" 16TB HDDs

Seagate starts shipping 16TB helium-based enterprise HDDs-- part of the Exos X16 family promising both high performance and record capacities for hyperscale datacentres. Also available are 16TB additions to the the IronWolf and IronWolf Pro NAS drive lines.

Seagate HDDsAccording to a Seagate-sponsored IDC whitepaper the Global Datasphere (the amount of data created, captured or replicated across the globe) is to grow from 33 zettabytes (ZB) in 2018 to 175ZB by 2025. As such, the world is in need for the highest storage density, as well as field-proven reliability and continuous high performance to handle a broad range of workload requirements.

The Exos X16 is a 3.5-inch 7200RPM HDD aimed at the OEM and distribution channel. The 16TB version delivers 33% more petabytes compared to 12TB drives, while maintaining the same small footprint for an overall reduced total cost of ownership. The drives feature increased I/O and enhanced caching capabilities, together with built-in security including Seagate Secure Instant Secure Erase for fast and easy drive retirement.

For customers employing multi-user NAS environments the IronWolf and IronWolf Pro 16TB drives support workloads reaching up to 300TB/year. Ideal for home and small office NAS systems, IronWolf drives promises performance, low noise and low power consumption in tasks such as backup, remote access and file sharing. IronWolf Pro HDDs are aimed at SMB and creative pro environments demanding heavy workloads to support data needs.
