The ARM OS for the IoT

E-mail Print PDF

ARM claims to have a solution for the unification of Internet of Things devices-- the mbed Iot Device Platform, a free operating system and integrated platform designed to run on low-level M-class microcontrollers.

IoTBuilt around open standards, mbed OS provides internet protocols, security and standards-based manageability for energy- and cost-constrained devices. It will be available free of charge, and has the support of a number of partners, including Freescale, IBM, Salesforce, Marvell and NXP.

Standards support includes Bluetooth Smart, 2G, 3G, LTE, CDMA, Thread, wifi and 802.15.4/6LoWPAN together with TLS/DTLS, CoAP, HTTP, MQTT and Lightweight M2M.

On the server side ARM offers mbed Device Server, a means to securely connect and manage devices, as well as bridge IoT device protocols with web development APIs.

A final piece of the mbed puzzle is mbed.org, a community of over 70000 developers providing a database of hardware development kits, reusable software components, reference applications, documentation and web-based development tools.

"Deploying IoT-enabled products and services requires a diverse set of technologies and skills to be coordinated across an organization," ARM says. "ARM mbed will make this easier by offering the necessary building blocks to enable our expanding set of ecosystem partners to focus on the problems they need to solve to differentiate their products, instead of common infrastructure technologies."

The mbed OS will be available to partners on Q4 2014, with production of first devices running on it to kick off on 2015.
