VMware takes advantage of VMworld 2013 Europe to announce the acquisition of longtime partner desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) developer Desktone for an undisclosed sum.

VMware“By bringing Desktone’s innovative platform in house, VMware can accelerate the delivery of DaaS through its network of over 11000 VMware service provider partners while helping to shape and lead the future of the industry,” a company statement says.

Desktone DaaS features a multitenant architecture and fully compliant with Microsoft virtual desktop requirements, having negotiated through Windows licensing since being founding on 2007.

Following the acquisition VMware will start testing a DaaS offering making use of Desktone technology (not Horizon View) running on the vCloud Hybrid Service.

VMworld also sees updaes on the VMware End-User Computing portfolio, including Horizon View 5.3 (with improved multimedia rendering and iOS 7/Windows 8.1 support), vCloud Automation Center 6.0 (allows for any custom IT service including Hadoop-as-a-Service), vCenter Operations Management Suite 5.8 (with improvied Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server analytics) and vCenter Log Insight 1.5 (with Active Directory integration).
