What Really is Microsoft's Growth Business?

E-mail Print PDF

It is easy for one to assume Microsoft makes more revenue from Windows than something as humble as servers-- but they'd be wrong. In fact, the Microsoft Servers and Tools division generated more revenue than Windows in fiscal 2012.

The S&T division covers server versions of Windows, database software, Azure cloud services, software development tools, systems management products and enterprise services.

Chart

As one can see in the Silicon Alley Insider chart, 2012 S&T revenues total $18.7 billion, while Windows revenue reaches $18.4bn.

One has to keep in mind Windows still generates more profit ($11.5bn compared to $7.4bn from S&T), even while Windows 7 reaches the end of its run.

And that is before one even mentions the biggest Microsoft division of them all-- the Office selling Business Division, with revenues reaching $24bn and $15.8bn in profits.

What does this mean? Microsoft is much more than Windows (never a healthy amount of Windows sales actually go to enterprise) or consumer offerings of the Xbox variety. The company actually makes over 50% of revenues from Business and S&T sales alone... meaning the enterprise market is still the healthiest of them all.
