Cisco completes the $3.7 billion acquisition of application intelligence software developer AppDynamics-- one of the biggest deals in the networking vendor's history, announced back in January 2017.

Cisco"We acquired AppDynamics because they are a market leader in a category that will be a cornerstone for how enterprises drive their business forward," cisco says. "Together, AppDynamics and Cisco will be the only company that can deliver complete visibility spanning from the infrastructure to application to end user."

Cisco bought the 9-year old AppDynamics days before it was to go IPO. It was the 17th Cisco acquisition under the leadership of Chuck Robbins, who took over the company as CEO in 2015.

AppDynamics helps customers monitor the performance of business applications through insights into the workings of said applications. This allows companies to spot chokepoints and performance issues potentially holding back transactions or other kinds of actions, stopping them before it is too late.

CEO David Wadhwani, remains leader of AppDynamics, if as a software unit under the Cisco IoT and Applications business. As the new owner puts it, it will "serve a critical role in helping drive Cisco's continued transformation into a software company."
