Amazon Joins Cloud Native Computing Foundation

In a perhaps unexpected move Amazon Web Services (AWS) announces it is a platinum member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), the open-source group leading development of Kubernetes.

AWSOriginally formed as a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project in July 2015, the CNCF counts charter members AT&T, Box, Cisco, the Cloud Foundry Foundation, CoreOS, Cycle Computing, Docker, eBay, Goldman Sachs, Google, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Joyent, Kismatic, Mesosphere, Red Hat, Switch SUPERNAP, Twitter, Univa, VMware and Weaveworks. It currently hosts 10 open-source projects, including Kubernetes.

“AWS plans to take an active role in the cloud native community, contributing to Kubernetes and other cloud native technologies such as containerd, CNI, and linkerd,” the CNCF says. In addition, AWS VP of Cloud Architecture Strategy Adrian Cockcroft joins the CNCF board.

The grapevine insists AWS will soon launch an own Kubernetes-based container management service. It also makes use of a good number of open-source projects, having been a member of the Linux Foundation since 2013, and regularly releases projects on GitHub. However, unlike the competition, AWS is not part of the Cloud Foundry foundation.
