The Linux Foundation announces the formation of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF)-- an effort in bringing together 19 makers of Linux-based container technologies within a shared set of standards and governance.
Founding members include big names, such as Google, IBM, Intel, Cisco, Twitter and VMware, as well as smaller players like Docker, Cycle Computing, Mesosphere and Weaveworks. Some major names are notably absent, including Microsoft, Amazon and Pivotal.
“The CNCF will help facilitate collaboration among developers and operators on common technologies for deploying cloud native applications and services,” the Linux Foundation says. “By bringing together the open source community’s very best talent and code in a neutral and collaborative forum, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation aims to advance the state of the art of application development at Internet scale.”
As the announcement press release puts, the foundation will look at open source at the orchestration level, before setting APIs and standards in order to integrate hosts and services. It will also collaborate with the recently launched Open Container Initiative (a Linux Foundation-led effort in the development of a common container standard) on container image specification.
The CNCF launch comes as Google releases the 1.0 version of Kubernetes, making it the first open source container toolset under CNCF governance.
