Eucalyptus Systems launches Eucalyptus 3.4-- the latest version of the private cloud software described as a means for customers to move entirely from AWS to own facilities.

Supposedly allowing organisations to "reduce cloud spend, increase agility and regain control over cloud performance, scale and security," Eucalyptus 3.4 features include image migration and management, a hybrid cloud user console, identity and access management (IAM) roles, enhanced availability and "warm upgrades" for the disruption-free private cloud upgrades.

Eucalyptus and Amazon have an interesting relationship-- started in March 2012, the partnership between the two companies allows Eucalyptus to use the AWS API to link its open source private cloud software with the AWS public cloud, allowing it to move workloads back and forth. It also allows customers to mix and match public and private clouds as they see fit to create custom hybrid clouds. Now Eucalyptus also wants to muscle into private cloud territory dominated by the likes of OpenStack.

"A single Eucalyptus private cloud can pay for itself in as little as 3 months," the company claims. "For organisations that need to dynamically scale their workloads to the public cloud, our compatibility with AWS allows companies to leverage this approach when it makes the most business sense."

Being open source, the development of Eucalyptus 3.4 involved 80105 commits from 81 contributors modifying 1.26 million lines of code.
