VMware Buys into Desktop-as-a-Service

VMware takes advantage of VMworld 2013 Europe to announce the acquisition of longtime partner desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) developer Desktone for an undisclosed sum. 

“By bringing Desktone’s innovative platform in house, VMware can accelerate the delivery of DaaS through its network of over 11000 VMware service provider partners while helping to shape and lead the future of the industry,” a company statement says. 

Desktone DaaS features a multitenant architecture and fully compliant with Microsoft virtual desktop requirements, having negotiated through Windows licensing since being founding on 2007.  Read more...

Who Powers the CIA's Private Cloud?

Bloomberg reports the US Court of Federal Claims decided against IBM following pleas for the CIA to reopen bidding on building its private cloud-- meaning Amazon is closer to taking the $600 million contract. 

The contract involves the provision of computing power, storage and further online services to the agency. 

"We are disappointed with the ruling from the US Court of Federal Claims, reversing the GAO’s recommendation to reopen the competition and correct flaws in the bidding process,” an IBM statement says before claiming the Big Blue offer "was superior in many ways, including being substantially more cost-effective.”

News of the CIA going to Amazon to for its cloud needs emerged on March 2013, following reports of the agency requiring a cost-effective private cloud infrastructure. The Microsoft Take on Enterprise Cloud

The Microsoft cloud strategy gets a boost with a number of enterprise additions-- including a partnership with Equinix, the launch of the Windows Azure IaaS component and discounts on Azure prices. 

“As enterprises move to the cloud they are going to bet on vendors that have best-in-class SaaS applications, operate a global public cloud that supports a broad ecosystem of 3rd party services, and deliver multi-cloud mobility through true hybrid solutions," cloud and enterprise executive VP Satya Nadella says. "If you look across the vendor landscape, you can see that only Microsoft is truly delivering in all of those areas.”

The announcements follow the release of Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Centre 2012 R2, promising Hyper-V virtualisation, lower-cost storage, built-in software-defined networking (SDN) and hybrid business continuity.  Read more...

Nirvanix Files for Bankruptcy

Following the threat of imminent implosion cloud storage provider Nirvanix files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in one of the higher profile cases of well regarded cloud startup failure. 

The announcement follows an agreement with IBM providing high-speed connections with "some companies" for customers to transfer data from Nirvanix to services. The company specifically suggests the use of IBM SoftLayer, Amazon S3, Google Storage or Microsoft Azure. 

"We are dedicating the resources we can to assisting our customers in either returning their data or transitioning their data to alternative providers," a company statement says.

Oracle Adds to Cloud Services

Oracle announces 10 additions to the Oracle Cloud at the OpenWorld 2013 conference-- extending what the company claims is "the industry’s broadest and most advanced cloud portfolio."

The new cloud services include the AWS-style Compute Cloud (allows customers to run workloads on the cloud) and Object Storage Cloud (provides storage for large amounts of unstructured data), as well as a managed Database Cloud (supports any Database application) and the Java Cloud (provides WebLogic Server clusters for Java app deployment). 

Customers wanting analytics get a Business Intelligence Cloud complete with self-service data uploading and dashboard tools, those wanting file sharing and collaboration have the Documents Cloud, and mobile device users are offered the Mobile Cloud.  Read more...
