Net Applications: Windows 7 Share Drops Further in July

Migration to Windows 10 is in high gear, web metrics vendor Net Applications reports-- Windows 7 PC share of all PCs is down by 3.6 percentage points in July 2019, the 2nd largest amount for a single month for the OS, bringing total share to 31.8%.

The Windows 7 portion of all Windows-based PCs is also down, specifically to 36%, the lowest since 2011 (or back when the Windows version was all of 2 years old and looking to take over from Windows XP). For the curious, according to Net Applications the share of all PCs running on Windows stands at 88.5% for July 2019, with the rest running on either macOS, Linux or Chrome OS.

IBM Sells Marketing Software Division

New York City-based private equity firm Centerbridge Partners acquires the IBM marketing software division, with the aim to create a standalone company working on marketing and commerce solution.

Financial details of the deal are not available.

The newly created company owns IBM Marketing Platform, together with other marketing automation tools, marketing analytics, an AI-powered content management system, an open ecosystem connector and robust services. Leading it as CEO is IBM Marketing Platform and Commerce offerings VP Mark Simpson, together with other Big Blue execs.

Chef Goes Open Source

Automation and dev ops developer Chef announces a change in the way it is both building and distributing software-- all products from the company are 100% open source under the Apache 2.0 license.

The license is consistent with the current Chef Infra, InSpec and Habitat license terms, and mean one can use, distribute and monetise the source code of Chef software, so long they respect the trademark policy. Previously Chef used an open core model, with a number of proprietary products complementing a set of open source tools. The move to open source should be a boon for partners, since it means they can deliver integration, customisation and support services for the software.

Extron announces GlobalViewer Enterprise (GVE) version 2.8, with more features to allow more efficient system management across the enterprise, including support for SMP series streaming media products and TouchLink Scheduling panels.

Users can easily access the web interface for an SMP, monitor remaining recording time, track calendar connection status for TLS panels, and monitor a range of other statuses and offline time for the newly supported products. CEE: A "Formidable" Competitor to Global Development Hot Spots

Ukraine, Poland, Belarus and Romania might represent a fraction of software development hot spots such as India or China, but together the four CEE countries exported $13 billion in development services in 2018, the Software Development in Ukraine, Poland, Belarus and Romania report claims.

Published jointly by AVentures Capital, Aventis Capital and Capital Times, the report looks into over 700 companies operating across the four countries. It states the service and software R&D market in the CEE countries is growing 20-25% annually, 4-5x faster compared to the global average of 5%. The US and EU are main markets, while in total the four countries house over 560000 professionals and 200 universities producing over 60000 specialist graduates annually.
