Dell Opens Networking With OS10

Dell takes the Open Networking Initiative a step further with Operating System 10 (OS10)-- a means to disaggregate network software from the underlying hardware, thus providing customers with more flexibility and programmability.

The Open Networking Initiative allows customers to buy Dell-branded switches before choosing from Dell or 3rd party operating systems and applications to create the ideal datacentre environment. OS10 represents a software-based evolution of the concept through a modular networking operating system. It features a free unmodified Linux-based base module running on top of the Open Compute Project Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI), providing a common language between vendor networking operating systems and the silicon making the physical switch.

OS10 supports traditional networking functions (L2/L3 protocols) from Dell, as well as 3rd party, native Linux and open source applications such as IP, fabric, securitiy services and management/automation tools-- essentially allowing customers to tailor IT operations according to use case and operational processes.

Cisco Updates ACI Platform

Cisco updates the Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) software defined networking (SDN) platform with the addition of microsegmentation, increased virtualisation capabilities and Docker support.

Microsegmentation comes on both physical (bare metal) and multivendor virtualised applications (VMware VDS, Microsoft Hyper-V), extending ACI across multi-site environments to deliver policy-driven automation across multiple datacentres.

Meanwhile Docker container integration comes through the Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) and Project Contiv, an open source project defining infrastructure operation policiesfor container-based application deployment.

Pakedge Ships BakPak 3.0

Pakedge Device and Software announces the full release of the 3rd version of the BakPak Cloud Management System, following the limited release back at InfoComm 2015 last month.

The cloud-based management solution provides installers with remote end-to-end control, as well as in-depth network device and control system management. It features prioritised alerts, robust permission settings, automated network repair and mapping, easy configuration management, report logging, backup and restore functionality, and TriPlex-- a trouble shooting the company says determines the cause of problems in case of network outage or configuration errors.

Pakedge claims BakPak 3.0 does not send misleading alerts, since it is intelligent enough to pinpoint the device failures causing network crashes. To do so it validates error alerts through situational-aware AI algorithms to provide accurate usable information in the shape of alerts sent via email, SMS or BakPak app.

Cisco Buys into SDN with Embrane

Cisco announces its acquisition of Embrane, a “lifecycle management platform for application-centric network services” provider the company has already invested $14 million in back in 2014.

Further financial details are not available.

The company is already familiar with the way its new owner works, having added lifecycle management a number of Cisco products, including the Adaptive Security Virtual Appliance and the Sourcefire virtual appliance, as well as other 3rd party systems.

One such product is the Elastic Service Manager, which adds firewall and load balancer management to the Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC).
