G-Technology Adds 4TB HDDs

G-Technology's G-Speed RAID external HDDs get improved enterprise-class storage-- the 4TB HGST Ultrastar, the highest capacity drive in its category according to the company.

The 4TB HGST Ultrastar offers 7200 RPM performance, 64MB cache and up to 2 million hours of mean-time-between-failure (MTBF). It also uses enterprise-specific firmware to reduce to performance impact of rotational vibration interference (RVI) in rack-mounted servers and multi-drive storage arrays.

The G-Speed RAID drive series is designed for AV applications, with all-aluminium Read more...

VSA Plans from ScaleIO

Startup ScaleIO emerges from stealth-mode with a renewed take on SANs-- Elastic Converged Storage (ECS) v1.1, a virtual storage appliance (VSA) combining the storage capacity of multiple servers.

According to the company ECS creates a file system scaleable to 1000s of servers in a data centre (including both existing and newly-purchased servers), without need for specialised storage admins or adding to the workload of existing administrators.

It also claims the system has enterprise-class resiliency similar (or better) to the traditional SAN, and Read more...

Amazon Takes on Data Warehouses

Amazon Web Services (AWS) previews a take on data warehouses at the re:Invent user conference-- Redshift, a cloud-based data warehouse promising better scalability and performances than on-premises equivalents.

According to the company Redshift not only costs less (on a per-terabyte basis) but also liberates admins from labour-intensive tasks such as monitoring, tuning, backup, software patching and fault recovery.

Customers can launch a Redshift cluster through the AWS Management consoles-- with sizes starting from "few hundred gigabytes" to over Read more...

LSI Intros Syncro Architecture

LSI launches a shareable, scaleable storage architecture making use of direct-attached storage (DAS) on top of MegaRAID technology-- Syncro, a system multi-server solution use.

According to the company Syncro architecture bridges the gap between DAS single-server storage and traditional external storage in order to handle environments ranging from SME and enterprise to large data centres and cloud.

Syncro comes within two LSI product families-- Syncro CS (for SMEs) and MX (for cloud and mega-data centres).

The first product using the architecture Read more...

EMC Shows off All-Flash Storage

EMC has a fairly interesting demo at VMworld 2012-- "Project X," the first all-flash storage array from the company.

Project X is the first product (developed in stealth mode) from recent EMC acquisition XtremIO.

According to EMC Project X is a scalable storage array built in MLC flash. Based on commodity server hardware, it includes a full range of storage features, including real-time inline deduplication, clones from snapshots, thin provisioning and VMware API (VAAI) support.

The system includes dual-storage processors (with no single point Read more...
