VMware VSAN Emerges from Beta

The VMware Virtual Storage Area Network-- aka VSAN-- emerges from beta to launch as an actual product dubbed VSAN 5.5, a virtual storage array with capacity reaching 32 nodes, 4.5 petabytes and 2 million IOPS.

First revealed at VMworld 2013, VSAN clusters storage from server HDDs and SSDs, with virtual machines tapping into storage capacity as required. It is built on vSphere hypervisor technology through which VMware promises fast performance.

The version numbering is actually relevant in VMware's plans for the project-- after all it matches that of software flagship vSphere 5.5, and allows users to switch VSAN on with just a couple of clicks and a licence key.

Toshiba Intros HG6 SSDs

Toshiba upgrades the HG5.d 2.5-inch SSD family with the HG6, a consumer-class SSD module lineup in a variety of form factors ideal for applications ranging from ultrabooks to data centre servers.

The HG6 drives are the first to use Toshiba 19nm MLC NAND flash, and carry the company's own controller and firmware. The interface of choice is SATA-6Gb/s, and form factors include 2.5-inch (7/9mm heights), mSATA and M.2 (single-sided, dual-sided).

Performance clocks at up to 534MB/s sequential read and 482MB/s sequential write.

CalDigit T3 Thunderbolt RAID

The CalDigit T3 is a three bay Thunderbolt RAID storage solution that features RAID 0 for performance, RAID 1 for protection, and JBOD.

Priced similarly to dual bay Thunderbolt RAID devices, the T3 gives users an extra drive bay that drastically improves performance and storage capacities. The T3 can support both high performance SSDs, and high capacity 3.5” HDDs. With SSDs installed the T3 can reach speeds of 850MB/s. With 3.5” HDDs installed it can reach speeds of 550MB/s. The T3 is available in capacities ranging from 6TB to 12TB when used with 3.5” HDDs. (The SSD version of the T3 is available in capacities up to 2.88TB.) Read more...

Graphene "Stickies" as USB Drive Replacement?

Graphene

A pair of Indian designers reveal an interesting-looking USB thumb drive replacement-- dataSTICKIES, thin graphene-based flash drives users write on and stick to surfaces as well as actually use to store data.

Currently still in the concept stage, the dataSTICKIES would stack on top of each other like a pack of post-it notes. The idea goes that one simply "peel" a drive from the stack and stick it (via low-tack multiuse conductive adhesive) to a proprietary wireless interface, the so-called Optical Data Transfer Surface (ODTS), in order to transfer data.

The dataSTICKIES consist of a slice of graphene-based material inside a protective layer, with an adhesive ODTS panel on top. Described as something of a potential wonder material for the transistors of the future, graphene might actually be key for smaller and higher capacity flash storage.

Samsung Shrinks the SSD

Samsung Shrinks the SSD

Samsung claims an industry first-- the 1TB capacity member of the newly launched 840 EVO mSATA SSD portfolio, promising high density and performance in a format approximately 25% of standard 2.5-inch SSDs.

“With the new mSATA SSD line-up offering up to 1TB of memory and an optimized software tool, we expect that consumers can enjoy high storage volume and performance on ultra-slim notebooks besides desktop PCs,” the company says.

The 840 EVO uses 128Gb NAND flash based on 10nm process technology, with the 1TB model using 4 flash memory packages (each with 16 layers of 128Gb chips) within a package 3.85mm thick and 8.5g heavy.
