Adata Goes for Enterprise Storage

DRAM and NAND flash storage maker Adata launches its first enterprise storage product-- the SX1000L, a 2.5-inch SATA SSD with advanced controller technology enhancing read/write performance.

The company claims the SX1000L features a mean time between failures (MTBF) of up to 1.5 million hours, together with sequential read speeds reaching 560MB/sec and sequential write of 340MB/sec.

Maximum 4K random IOPS total 73000 ( read) and 45000 (write).

SMART command and user-defined over-provisioning adjustment further enhance power-loss data protection Read more...

Graphene + Molybdenite = Better Flash?

Scientists at EPFL believe the future of flash memory makes use of a pair of materials-- graphene and molybdenite, two materials already used in promising component prototypes.

The Laboratory of Nanometer Electronics and Structures (LANES) discovered the electronic properties of molybdenite (MoS2) back in 2011. Similar in structure to graphene (being a "2-dimensional" material), molybdenite has interesting semi-conducting properties allowing it to switch very easily between "on" and "off" states (like those write commands use) without using a Read more...

Seagate Ships 2 Billion HDDs

Seagate celebrates a milestone-- the storage maker claims it is the first to ship 2 billion HDDs, a total fueled by demand from mobile applications, cloud infrastructures, social media and various consumer markets.

The company shipped 1 billion HDDs on April 2008 after 29 years of operation, and the second billion after just 4 years.

“This is truly an impressive accomplishment and I am proud to lead this company as we celebrate this success," Seagate CEO Steve Luczo says. "This achievement is a testament to the commitment of our employees wh Read more...

EMC Flash Goes Xtrem

EMC launches a PCIe-based NAND flash server cards lineup-- the XtremSF family, with technology from May 2012 acquisition XtremeIO, who now acts as in-house NAND flash server maker.

Available in a variety of eMLC (550GB and 2.2TB) and SLC (350GB and 700GB) capacities, XtremSF products are deployable as either direct attached storage (DAS) sitting within a server or in combination with XtremSW Cache (formerly known as VFCache) server caching software to boost network storage array performance.

All XtremSF PCIe cards are standard half-weight, Read more...

Violin Memory and Toshiba Team Up in Storage

Memory-based storage maker Violin Memory expands partnership with NAND flash inventor Toshiba in order to create a new generation of PCIe flash memory cards for server use.

Toshiba will supply the NAND flash while Violin provides access to enterprise IP relating to PCI architecture and memory-based storage software.

The alliance also brings economies of scale to Violin, as well as full visibility and control of Toshiba supply chain, manufacturing, distribution and R&D efforts at the foundry, chip and software layer.

“Our new focus on PCIe cards wi Read more...
