John McAfee Settles With Intel Over Name

E-mail Print PDF

Colourful antivirus pioneer John McAfee decides to settle with Intel, following the dismissal of his September 2016 lawsuit (and Intel countersuit) over the right to use his name on other projects.

John McafeeAs Reuters reports, McAfee sued Chipzilla after a warning that renaming his latest venture, MGT Capital Investments, as "John McAfee Global Technologies Inc." would infringe its trademarks. In turn, Intel countered with accusations of trademark infringement and unfair competition.

The reportedly amicable settlement has McAfee agree to not use his name, trademark his name or the phrase "John McAfee Privacy Phone" or use "John McAfee Global Technologies" in connection with security-related products or services. He retains the right to use his name in advertising, promotions and presentations, including in regard to his former role at McAfee the company, which he sold to Intel for $7.7 billion back in 2010.

The last few years saw John McAfee's life take a series of increasingly bizarre turns. In November 2012 he was suspected of murdering a neighbour in the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize, where he lived after he fled Florida in 2010 in order to (allegedly) avoid fallout from a lawsuit surrounding the death of his nephew in a flying accident.

Even before the murder allegations, McAfee managed to butt heads with the authorities in Bolivia. For instance, at one point he was accused of the possession of unlicensed weapons and the production of methamphetamine. In any case, he managed to flee from Bolivia but was found in Guatemala through the checking of the metadata in a photo posted on a Vice Magazine story titled "We Are With John McAfee Right Now, Suckers."

After his adventure in the South American heart of darkness McAfee returned to the US, where he cleaned his act ever so slightly even as he produced comic videos mocking his image as a paranoid gun-toting drug addict. Then he decided to take a stab at 2016 presidential election through the Libertarian Party.

McAfee lost the primary to Gary Johnson, but even if he won he wouldn't have been the most weird figure in the race-- after all, lest we forget, the current president is no other than Donald Trump...
