Cisco announces the addition of the S-Series to the Unified Computing System (UCS) portfolio with the UCS S3260-- a storage-focused server designed to handle big data, streaming media and software-defined storage.

Cisco storage serverAnnounced at the Cisco Partner Summit in San Francisco, the UCS S3260 offers room for up to 600TB in a 4U system. The combination of UCS Manager, cache acceleration and unified I/O allow for scalability to petabyte scale, while a modular architecture promises to cut costs by reducing cabling and eliminating ongoing management.

Enterprise can populate the server with different combinations of HDDs, SSDs, networking and computing elements to best suit the applications running on it. Each chassis can be linked via Cisco fabric interconnect, allowing one the connection of up to 26 S3260 servers for total capacity of 15PB.

Also announced at the summit is the next generation of the Cisco collection of cloud management software, the ONE Enterprise Cloud Suite. The suite consists of 4 modules customers can purchase separately, namely infrastructure automation, IT service management, cloud management, and big data automation.

New for 2016 is the addition of cloud orchestration via recent Cisco acquisition CliQr, while the sales model has been changed from perpetual licenses to 1, 3 or 5 year subscriptions.
