Dell Offloads IT Services Arm to NTT

E-mail Print PDF

Dell makes something of loss as it sells its professional services businesses to NTT Data, the IT consulting unit of Japanese telecom giant Nippon Telegraph & Telephone, for $3.06 billion.

Dell buildingFormerly known as Perot Systems, the Dell IT services business was acquired back in 2009 for $3.9bn. Dell was reportedly hoping to make $3.6bn from the sale, but the final price still goes some way in denting the $49bn debt load from the $67bn acquisition of EMC.

The acquisition provides NTT with the Dell customer list (one spanning vertical markets across the healthcare, banking and financial services, and public sector industries), infrastructure, cloud and application services portfolio, outsourcing capabilities, 28000 employees (based primarily in N. America and India), and datacentres in the US, UK and Australia.

Other Dell units are rumoured to be on the selling block-- namely software brand Quest, security outfit SonicWall and backup provider AppAssure. The grapevine suggests the company looks to make at least $10bn from the sales, all in the name of wiping at least part off the aforementioned EMC-related debt.
