Seagate Boasts "Fastest Ever" SSD

E-mail Print PDF

Seagate Technology shows off what it claims is the fastest ever SSD-- one with throughput performance of 10GB/s, 4GB/s faster than the previous contender for the fastest SSD title.

Seagate SSDThe 10GB/s unit meets the specifications outlined by Facebook's Open Compute Project (OCP), and as such should be ideal for hyperscale datacentre applications. It also promises to reduce the power and cost requirements associated with such performance levels.

The drive demands Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe), the company's replacement for the SATA standard.

“Your data is only as good as how easily you can access it and put it to use,” the storage maker says. “Seagate is committed to providing the full spectrum of technologies to help meet the diverse needs of organisations so they can unlock this value. Whether for consumer cloud or business applications, this SSD will help improve on demands for fast access to information, where split seconds drive incremental value gains.”

While the 10GB/s SSD operates on 16-lane PCIe slots, Seagate is also working on a unit compatible with 8-lane PCIe slots offering 6.7GB/s throughput, making it the fastest in the 8-lane card category. Both products hit the market on Q3 2016.
