The European Commission announces the winners of the first Call for Tender for Cloud Services (CLOUD 1)-- a €34.5 million cloud framework described as a first "decisive step" in moving the EC to the cloud.
"The cloud will enable the Commission to follow the ceaseless pace of today's technological race among infrastructure providers where costs of storage, bandwidth and computing power are decreasing day-by-day while enabling at the same time innovative solutions for new challenges such as big data," a commission statement reads.
CLOUD 1 received 20 offers from 12 tenderers, with 7 offers for Lot one (worth €10.25m), 9 offers for Lot two (€13.9m) and 4 offers for Lot three (€10.3m). The only bidder making it into Lot one for private Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is BT Limited Belgian Branch.
BT Belgian Branch also makes it into Lot two, public IaaS, together with BM Belgium, Accenture, Cloud Team Alliance and Atos. Making Lot three, public Platform as a Service (PaaS) are Telecom Italia, Accenture, Atos Belgiuma nd IBM Belgium.
The framework will run for a maximum of 4 years, with 75% of the contract volume reserved by institutions other than the EC, making 56 participants in total.
