IBM Opens IoT HQ in Munich

IBM confirms its investment in both the Internet of Things (IoT) and Europe with the opening of the global Watson IoT HQ in Munich, a 670000 square-foot facility based in the Highlight Towers.

Munich skylineDescribed by Big Blue as "one of the biggest investments that we've made in Europe," the facility employs over 1000 developers, consultants, researchers and designers. It is the centrepiece of 8 IBM global regional customer centres based in Beijing, Boeblingen (Germany), Sao Paulo, Seoul, Tokyo, Massachusetts, N. Carolina and Texas.

The centres deliver technology and tools for the creation of products and services through the Watson IoT Cloud Platform.

“The IoT will soon be the largest single source of data on the planet, yet almost 90% of that data is never acted upon,” IBM adds. “With its unique abilities to sense, reason and learn, Watson opens the door for enterprises, governments and individuals to finally harness this real-time data, compare it with historical data sets and deep reservoirs of accumulated knowledge, and then find unexpected correlations that generate new insights to benefit business and society alike.”

IBM also adds 4 API services to the Watson IoT Analytics offering-- Natural Language Processing (enables users to interact with systems using simple language), Machine Learning (automates data processing and monitors new data and user interactions), Video and Image Analytics (monitors unstructured data from video feeds and image snapshots to identify scenes and patterns) and Text Analytics (mines unstructured text data to find correlations and patterns).
