E-mail Print PDF

Just a month ago Nebula, the cloud startup founded by ex-NASA CTO Chris Kemp, closed shop. However its employees were not out of work for long-- according to Re/Code 40 Nebula employees are now part of the Oracle cloud effort.

Nebula containerThe former Nebula employees report to Oracle senior VP for cloud development Peter Magnusson, the story continues.

Nebula was formed in 2013 by a team of ex-OpenStack engineers. Its offered a "turnkey private cloud system" dubbed the Nebula One, an OpenStack-based system designed to provide even the smallest customers with an Amazon-style cloud. The company had numerous big-name customers, including Lockheed Martin, Genentech and Xerox, but ultimately failed to turn a profit.

"We are deeply disappointed that the market will likely take another several years to mature," the company as it shut down. "As a venture backed start up, we did not have the resources to wait."

It is unclear whether founder Chris Kemp also joined Oracle, since Re/code simply says Oracle offered jobs to 90% of Nebula engineers.
