Amazon Web Services (AWS) announces new datacentres in Frankfurt, Germany, making a 2nd region in the EU and the 11th for the company, opening AWS cloud computing services for more European customers.

AWS FrankfurtAmazon insists the data center confirms to all compliance standards, including ISO 21001, SOC 1 (formerly SAS 70) and PCI DSS Level 1, as well as all applicable EU data protection laws. It also provides data processing agreements for customers wanting to comply with EU data protection requirements.

“Our European business continues to grow dramatically,” AWS says. “By opening a second European region, and situating it in Germany, we’re enabling German customers to move more workloads to AWS, allowing European customers to architect across multiple EU regions, and better balancing our substantial European growth.”

On launch the AWS EU (Frankfurt) region consists of 2 separate Availability Zones, and customers can run applications within multiple Zones and even across multiple AWS EU regions. AWS services accessible from the Frankfurt region include Amazon EC2, EBS, S3, Glacier and Redshift, among others, while ISV technologies available include Canonical, Red Hat, SUSE, Trend Micro, Twilio, Acquia, Apigee, Bitnami, Esri, Infor, SAP, and Siemens.
