Intel Buys Wireless Assets

E-mail Print PDF

Intel acquires means to extend the reach of x86-based architecture into mobile operator networks as it buys the wireless inftrastructure unit of Mindspeed Technologies for an undisclosed sum.

BasetationMindspeed makes wireless telecommunications silicon for use in base-stations. On November 2013 it was acquired by network chip maker M/ACOM Technology Solutions for $272 million.

With the acquisition Intel gains technology used in radio-access networks (RANs), specifically the chips inside the DSPs (digital signal processors) receiving and translating radio signals in cellular networks.

"Our goal has always been to consolidate all four [wireless network] workloads to run on IA and we have already made significant steps towards enabling the last one-- signal processing on Intel-based servers," an Intel blog post says. "With a unique ability to consolidate all four communication workloads [...] we’re executing on our strategy to deliver flexibility and intelligence throughout the entire network."

Will Intel become an end-to-end network chip supplier? The mobile market appears ripe for the picking, even if Chipzilla so far failed to penetrate it. Maybe it will find luck within the wireless operators.
