Astrium Intros Skywan 5G

Astrium Services announces the Skywan 5G at AfricaCom 2013-- a next generation satcom modem the company promises will bring further simplicity to satellite communications.

Skywan 5GThe Skywan 5G is a bi-directional MF-TDMA plus DVB system. It supports voice, video and data applications in the most bandwidth efficient manner, and enables star, mesh, multi-star or hybrid topologies with communications-on-the-move (COTM) support.

Each unit can act as either hub or master station, and Customers can even change topologies at a later stage, use the unit in other networks and split or pool networks together.

Peak LAN port IP rates reach up to 20Mbps in transit and receive directions.

At only 1 RU the Skywan 5G is also one of the smallest hub devices on the market able to support outdoor equipment via own power supply. It is rack-mountable and can be used as a tabletop device.

“Skywan 5G unlocks new business opportunities with improved total cost of ownership for service providers that need to leverage multiple hub or hubless network configurations” Astrium says. “modem is currently undergoing diligent customer tests and will be commercially available on Q2 2014."
