AMD Intros SeaMicro SM15000 Micro Server

E-mail Print PDF

AMD reveals the results the earlier SeaMicro acquisition with the SM15000-- a fabric-based server chassis offering storage capacities of up to 5 petabytes spread over 1408 HDDs or SSDs.

SM15000The SM15000 uses SeaMicro's Feedom Fabric to build "micro" servers, allowing data centres to expand compute, networking and storage capacities independently.

AMD says the system is ideal for software platforms such as Hadoop or Cassandra, which make use of multiple machines for the crunching of big data on the cloud.

It has 64 "compute card" slots, each supporting up to 512 cores with 10gb of bandwidth per processor. It also supports up to 4TB of DDR3 DRAM (at 64GB per processor), 64 SATA HDDs or SSDs within the system and x16 10-gigabit ethernet links (or x64 1-gigabit ethernet uplinks).

AMD currently offers compute cards carrying the Intel Xeon E3-1265Lv2, a 2.5/3.1GHz quad-core processor supporting up to 32GB of DRAM. Those too shocked by an AMD server carrying Intel processors can get a configuration with AMD's own "Piledriver" Opteron chips from November 2012.
